Technology Marketing SummaryThis invention relates in general to compositions to remove ice, snow and/or frost ("frozen precipitation") from surfaces and/or to prevent ice from forming on surfaces, and in particular to deicing/anti-icing fluids.DescriptionThis technology is for preparing lower-toxicity, less corrosive, and typically bio-based deicing/anti-icing fluids for aerospace and non-aerospace applications. The use of bio-based ingredients allows the toxicity and corrosivity as well as the carbon footprint to be reduced. A major aspect of this technology is the reduction in number of additives used for achieving various specifications; this is possible by using multi-purpose additives. While the original applications were for aircraft deicing/anti-icing and runway deicing/anti-icing, the technology is applicable to roadway/pavement as well as many other deicing/anti-icing applications.Benefits• Typically 50-90 % reduction in ecotoxicity
• Typically 30% or more reduction in oxygen demand for aircraft applications
• Typically 50-80% lower corrosivity towards steel, various aerospace alloys, cadmium-coated parts and aircraft brakes
• Significantly lower life-cycle cost based on fluid costs, wastewater handling costs and corrosion-related costs.

Deicing/anti-icing fluids
A nontoxic deicing/anti-icing fluid includes a freezing point depressant selected from short chain polyols having 3 to 5 carbons atoms, and mixtures thereof, a wetting agent, an antioxidant/preservative, and water. The fluid has an LD.sub.50 greater than about 10,000 mg/L. Another deicing/anti-icing fluid includes the freezing point depressant, a vinylpyrrolidone polymer having a molecular weight between about 10,000 and about 700,000, and water. A runway deicing fluid includes glycerol, a buffer, an antioxidant/preservative, and water. Another deicing/anti-icing fluid includes a freezing point depressant having hydrophobic character, a wetting agent comprising an organophosphorus compound capable of producing an organic wettable surface, and water.

Process for producing a deicing/anti-icing fluid
In a process for producing a deicing/anti-icing fluid, a byproduct stream is obtained from a process that produces monoalkyl esters of long chain fatty acids. The stream includes water, glycerol, and an alkali-containing compound. The stream is converted to a deicing/anti-icing fluid by adding an acid to the stream to neutralize the alkali-containing compound to produce an alkali salt that functions as a supplemental freezing point depressant.
