Technology Marketing SummaryAromatic diamines are currently used as curatives in an array of applications such as polyurea and epoxies. When used as curatives, aromatic diamines have relatively short pot lives (gel times) due to their high reactivity, especially in reactions with polyisocyanates and epoxides. In order to increase their pot lives and provide more even filling of complex molds, Battelle has developed a process for decreasing the reactivity of aromatic diamines by partial amidification with 2.5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). FDCA is an aromatic biobased diacid derived from fructose. The FDCA bisamide derivatives of high volume aromatic diamines used to form molded objects were shown to be substantially less reactive than the starting diamines leading to significant increases in pot lives when mixed with polyisocyanates.Description

Difunctional aromatic diamines (e.g. Ethacure® 100 and 300) are derivatized with furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) to form FDCA-derived bisamides; the derivatives have enhanced curative properties when used as curatives for polyureas, hybrid epoxy-urethanes, hybrid urea-urethanes, chain extenders for polyurethane and polyurea elastomers, and also for reaction injection molding (RIM) products.
