Ester compounds and their use in forming acrylates

The present invention provides compounds having the formula: ##STR1## wherein: n is 0 or 1; R.sub.4 through R.sub.12 are independently selected from hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl, C.sub.6 to C.sub.10 aryl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkoxy, C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 aryloxy, C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 aralkyl; and R.sub.1 through R.sub.3 are hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl, C.sub.6 to C.sub.10 aryl, or C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 aralkyl. Methods of making and using these compounds are also described. Methods of converting .alpha.-hydroxy carboxylic esters and acids to acrylates are also described.
