A cathode material and processes of preparation, including the composition, the steps of mixing and heating to obtain a crystallographically phase pure layered material which is a substituted lithium nickel oxide compositions of Li.sub.uNi.sub.vTi.sub.wAl.sub.xCo.s- ub.yO.sub.z, where u is between about 0.8 and about 1.2, the v is between about 0.5 and about 0.99, w is between about 0.01 and about 0.5, x is between about 0.00 and about 0.5, y is between about 0.00 and about 0.5, and z is between about 1.8 and 2.3. Such a substituted lithium nickel oxide may be used for energy conversion and storage, particularly for high power application.
