An apparatus for producing mixed oxide nanoparticles uses thermophilic bacteria cultured with suitable reducible metals in the presence of an electron donor to reduce at least one metal to form mixed oxide nanoparticles. The mixed oxide nanoparticles can have a magnetism greater than magnetite, such as a line width (.DELTA.H) of at least 2,200 Gauss. The magnetic nanoparticles can be used to form improved magnetorheological media, magnetic storage, dry printing and magnetic devices.
