A lithium ion battery having a cathode including an .alpha.-copper vanadium oxide having a stoichiometry of Cu.sub.7-xV.sub.6O.sub.19-X, wherein 0.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.5, and a discharge capacity of at least 250 mAh/g after 20 cycles is claimed. Solid state and hydrothermal reaction methods of synthesizing the .alpha.-copper vanadium oxide are also claimed.
