The invention includes a spike retainer having a channel through a sidewall of a bore. A keeper has a segment within the channel and a segment extending into a spike receiving region. The invention includes a spike retainer having a bore in a component and a keeper extending through a base surface of the bore. The keeper has a segment within the receiving region. The invention includes a tire deflation device. Spikes are removably insertable into bores within a device component. A keeper extends along a sidewall of the spike within each of the bores. The invention includes a method of reversibly retaining a spike. A channel is provided passing through a sidewall of a bore. A segment of a keeper is positioned within the channel and a segment is disposed within a spike receiving region of the bore. A spike is inserted into the receiving region.
