Laves phase-related BCC metal hydride alloys historically have limited electrochemical capabilities. Provided are a new examples of these alloys useful as electrode active materials. Alloys include a composition defined by Formula I: Ti.sub.wV.sub.xCr.sub.yM.sub.z (I) where w+x+y+z=1, 0.1.ltoreq.w.ltoreq.0.6, 0.1.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.0.6, 0.01.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.6 and M is selected from the group consisting of B, Al, Si, Sn and one or more transition metals that achieve discharge capacities of 350 mAh/g or greater for cycles of 10 or more.
