The invention provides an ionic liquid composition having the following generic structural formula (1): ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are each independently a hydrocarbon group containing at least 4 carbon atoms, and R.sup.5 is a branched hydrocarbon group containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms atoms. The invention also provides a lubricant composition containing an ionic liquid dissolved in a base oil.
