A mixed transition metal oxide is provided described wherein Aluminum is partially substituted for Cobalt in a Li[Ni.sub.xCo.sub.yMn.sub.z]O.sub.2 composition wherein the resulting aluminum substituted product Li[Ni.sub.0.4Co.sub.0.2-yAl.sub.yMn.sub.0.4]O.sub.2 is less costly than the parent product, is safer to use, and provides enhanced electrochemical performance as a cathode material for use in Lithium-ion based batteries.
